The Percy Jackson Movie – Not Too Amazing

a movie review by Jerry L (our resident Greek mythology enthusiast, boggle champion, and brutal film critic)

Recently, a new movie named The Lightning Thief came out. The Lightning Thief is also the first book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians sequel. Since I have read the book and found it quite interesting, I decided to go to the movie. I went in the theatre excitedly but walked out of the theatre disappointedly. Actually, the movie is pretty cool but it’s just so weird compared to the book.

I think the movie is weird because it changed the whole book. Instead of trying to go to Hades and find the master bolt, they went to search for three pearls for emergency escape from Hades. In the movie, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover went to seek help from Luke. Luke gave them advices about Hades and then handed them a map to find three pearls for fast escapes from Hades. The map included Garden Gnome Emporium, a strange museum, and the Lotus Hotel. Finally, he gave Percy his flying shoes and a shield that had the lightning bolt hidden behind the handle. They had gone to the Garden Gnome Emporium and killed Medusa. However, Percy didn’t send the head away; he kept it and used it to petrify the hydra at the museum when they took a pearl out of Athena’s (a statue) crown. They got the third pearl from the Lotus Hotel. Last, they went to Hades from Hollywood. There’s no field of punishment, there’s not even a single soul shown on there (except for the ferryman). There was only a castle, no other monsters, only some hellhounds. Percy and his companions went into the castle and they met Hades and his wife. Then, the event is pretty much the same as the book until Hades almost got them killed but Hades’ wife blasted Hades with the master bolt. She claimed that she did that because the war would stop her visit away from Hades. They had three pearls but there’s four people (plus Percy’s mom).Instead of leaving Percy’s mom there, they left Grover there. They flew right to the Empire Building. Then, Luke came out and fought with Percy. He wore a pair of flying shoes too. Eventually, Percy won. After he delivered the master bolt to Zeus, he requested to Zeus that Grover deserved to come back from Hades. The end for the movie.  I almost forgot to tell you, Annabeth didn’t have the Yankee cap and Percy wore the flying shoes in the movie. There’s way more difference so I just put down some major ones. There are few similarities: the characters’ genders are right. Percy was Poseidon’s son, Annabeth was Athena’s daughter, Grover was satyr, Luke was the son of Hermes, and Chiron was a centaur. And their behavior are still the same.

I think it will be cool for people who didn’t read the book and for the rest of us it’s not too amazing.
