New Architects design Houses in Learning Lab
Over the past few weeks of the Cultural and Language Immersion program, I have seen some really impressive work. It has been a fun and intense time, with so much information being passed on to the youngsters. Today’s class, however, took me for a tailspin.
Of all the learning labs I have created for the students, the clubhouse design lab was certainly the most ambitious. For that exact reason, I was the least sure of what the results would be. In a 4 hour lab, I planned on introducing the students to the idea of an architect, sketch rough floor plans, then jump onto a completely new piece of software advanced enough to build skyscrapers. In my head I was looking forward to ultimately seeing a few students with crude clubhouses. What happened, however, was this:
Of the 10 students who attempted this lab, 5 came up with complete wall sections for a house, with windows and doors. The others all had built various floor plans, some quite complex. After only 2 hours, these kids had learned be basics of designing 3D models!
Intuitive software does play a role in how quickly students pick up these skills, but there must also be a deeper familiarity with technology and virtual reality present in the student. The age of the digital natives is upon us

Is that Henry’s design?! It would take this digital alien at least 12 years to catch up to the design prowess of this 12-year-old digital native! Sweet looking clubhouse!
Sorry tim,
technically you are a digital immigrant. Your alien status was revoked the minute you started typing a comment into a blog
