Little Mountain Learning Academy’s LMO online courses (Asia time zone) provide students living outside North America with a true Canadian education experience. Our online courses will adhere to the teaching style and teaching philosophy of Little Mountain School and are of the same high quality as offline courses.
Academic Writing Core Course
Designed for students aged 7-18, our program is tailored for those whose reading and communication skills align with their current school year. If you’re eager to enhance your writing abilities, this opportunity is available exclusively on Saturday mornings in China. The classes are conducted in a blended format, combining both online and offline sessions with local Vancouver students. Benefit from the personalized attention offered in small class settings, ranging from levels 1 to 6. Join us on this journey to elevate your writing skills in a collaborative and engaging environment.
Teachers
All teachers are qualified Canadian teachers with a North American undergraduate degree or above, a globally accepted TESOL English education qualification certificate, and many years of experience in teaching Asian students. Their teaching methods and class time can better meet the needs of students in Asia.
Eligible Students
Students aged 7-18 with reading and comprehensive abilities at or above their grade level (e.g., if a child is in Grade 5, their reading and comprehensive abilities should be at or above the North American Grade 5 level after testing).
Learning Outcomes
Hare (Grade 1 – 3)
The Hare Program is a comprehensive language arts program for Grade 1 to Grade 3 students. In each 1.5-hour class, students expand their English Language Arts knowledge. The program enables students to make exceptional progress in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking and listening skills.
Upon completion of the Hare program, your child will:
- Develop Writing Skills: They’ll learn sentence structure, organization, and coherence.
- Create Original Texts: They’ll design and write their own fiction and nonfiction texts.
- Analyze Fiction: They’ll learn to critique fictional texts, examining plot, character development, themes, and literary devices.
- Master Language Skills: They’ll focus on accuracy in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Engage in Deeper Learning: They’ll explore topics beyond surface-level knowledge.
- Develop Critical Thinking: They’ll analyze, evaluate, and apply information.
- Learn Research Skills: They’ll gather, evaluate, and synthesize information from various sources.
- Ask Insightful Questions: They’ll learn to ask meaningful and thought-provoking questions.
- Understand Global Issues: They’ll learn about global challenges, cultures, and perspectives.
Deer (Grades 4 – 5)
The Deer Program is a language arts program for students in Grades 4 and 5. It aims to strengthen students’ reading and writing skills through systematic, engaging lessons. Students will explore a variety of high-quality texts, learn to craft extended pieces of writing, and develop their public speaking skills. They will also expand their vocabulary, enhance their spoken fluency, and practice self- and peer-editing.
Upon completion of the Deer program, your child will:
- Craft Comprehensive Pieces: They’ll learn to construct extended pieces of writing, such as essays and narratives.
- Engage with Quality Texts: They’ll explore a variety of high-quality texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
- Express Ideas Confidently: They’ll learn to communicate their ideas effectively and confidently, both verbally and in writing.
- Expand Vocabulary: They’ll develop a rich vocabulary, enhancing their ability to express themselves with precision and nuance.
- Enhance Presentation Skills: They’ll build spoken fluency and confidence through engaging in presentations.
- Develop Literary Analysis Skills: They’ll cultivate the ability to analyze and interpret literary texts.
- Practice Self and Peer-Editing: They’ll acquire self-editing and peer-editing skills, enabling them to review and revise their own writing.
Dove (Grades 6 – 7)
The Dove Program is a language arts program for students in Grades 6 and 7. It nurtures students’ reading and writing strengths through structured, engaging lessons. Students will be guided in creating comprehensive long-form works, explore top-tier literary works, and articulate their thoughts persuasively and coherently. They will also significantly enhance their vocabulary, refine their presentation capabilities, and develop self-assessment and peer-feedback skills.
Upon completion of the Dove program, your child will:
- Develop Extended Writing Proficiency: They’ll learn to create comprehensive long-form works, including essays and narratives.
- Engage with Exceptional Texts: They’ll delve into a variety of top-tier literary works, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
- Express Ideas Assertively: They’ll learn to communicate their ideas assertively and clearly, both in speech and writing.
- Deepen Vocabulary Knowledge: They’ll significantly enhance their vocabulary, enabling more precise and nuanced expression.
- Enhance Presentation Abilities: They’ll refine their presentation capabilities and bolster their spoken fluency.
- Refine Literary Critique: They’ll sharpen their ability to evaluate and interpret literary works.
- Develop Self and Peer-Review Skills: They’ll perfect their ability to critique and revise their own work and give beneficial feedback to peers.
Bear (Grades 8 – 9)
The Bear Program is a language arts program for students in Grades 8 and 9. It fosters students’ strengths in reading and writing through structured, captivating lessons. Students will perfect the art of constructing extended pieces, delve into exceptional literary works, and learn to communicate their ideas assertively and clearly. They will also enrich their vocabulary, enhance their presentation abilities, and perfect their self- and peer-editing skills.
Upon completion of the Bear program, your child will:
- Master Extended Writing: They’ll perfect the art of constructing extended pieces, including essays and narratives.
- Engage with Exceptional Texts: They’ll delve into a variety of exceptional literary works, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
- Express Ideas Assertively: They’ll learn to communicate their ideas assertively and clearly, both in speech and writing.
- Expand Vocabulary: They’ll enrich their vocabulary, enhancing their ability to express ideas with greater detail and effectiveness.
- Enhance Presentation Abilities: They’ll enhance their presentation abilities and bolster their spoken fluency.
- Refine Literary Critique: They’ll sharpen their ability to evaluate and interpret literary works.
- Develop Self and Peer-Editing Skills: They’ll perfect their ability to critique and revise their own work and give beneficial feedback to peers.
Eagle (Grades 10 – 12)
The Eagle Program is a two-year Literature and Composition course designed for self-directed and self-motivated learners in grades 10-12. The program explores the theme of systems in human history and literature, fostering empathy, determination, and proficiency in learners. Students develop advanced communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills through a synthesis of literary studies, composition, and the design cycle process.
Upon completion of the Eagle program, your child will:
- Enhance Written Expression: They’ll demonstrate understanding and analytical thinking through written expression, and make connections between texts.
- Develop Discourse and Research Skills: They’ll explore different modes of discourse and complete independent research. Improve Literary Comprehension: They’ll use and identify literary devices, form personal hypotheses based on text, and discuss complex concepts.
- Broaden Worldview: They’ll identify political figures and historical events, discuss controversial issues respectfully, and identify multiple perspectives in an issue.
- Critically Analyze Media: They’ll look at media sources critically.
- Boost Communication Skills: They’ll express insights and opinions fluently, ask critical questions, and prepare well-organized presentations.
